Systems Administrator — Remote

This is a great opportunity for a skilled, highly motivated Systems Administrator to come in on the ground floor. We are a very small team, so you'll have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of IT operations, from cybersecurity and networking to server and application configuration. Depending on your skills, interest, and time, you may also support the full DevOps pipeline from automated build to production application deployment and monitoring.

You may support both internal corporate assets as well as infrastructure established for external clients. This isn't necessarily a customer-facing role, but a portion of our infrastructure is dedicated to customers.

What you'll do
  • Support administration and maintenance of external customer systems. For example, you may:
    • Develop Ansible and other scripts to automate deployment and maintenance tasks.
    • Set up accounts or groups needed to support external user applications
    • Install webservers or other software to support external client deployments
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with firewalls, SELinux, or fapolicyd
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with customer passwords or remote connectivity
  • Configure, maintain, and monitor virtual machines (VMs). For example, you may:
    • Perform and track regular system updates
    • Run and track security compliance scans and remediate issues
    • Monitor system backup activity
    • Monitor system usage and resource availability
    • Configure a VM created from a baseline image to serve as a file share, Kerberos KDC, or DNS server
  • Install, configure and maintain core enterprise-level applications. For example, you may be responsible for:
    • Apache Http and Tomcat instances
    • GitLab, Artifactory, and Jenkins deployments
    • Elasticsearch and Kibana instances
    • DNS, NFS, and Kerberos servers
  • Depending on your experience, you may work with the team to expand our main corporate infrastructure. For example, you may research, design, and implement:
    • System monitoring and backup capabilities
    • Network configuration enhancements
    • Corporate IT policies and procedures
What you'll get out of it
  • Experience in a wide variety of Systems Administration tasks typically done, in larger organizations, by different specialists
  • The opportunity to participate in all aspects of the development of a enterprise capability, from research to delivery and maintenance
  • The chance to take ownership of infrastructure development projects, and implement your own ideas about IT operations automation
  • An exposure to Cybersecurity and DoD standards such as NIST SP 800-171 and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) 2.0
What you'll need

In general, you should:

  • Want to participate in all aspects of IT operations from networking to core service configuration and support
  • Have a desire to learn new skills and tools as IT operations and Cybersecurity continue to evolve
  • Know or want to learn the details of NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC 2.0
  • Be interested in Cybersecurity, and automation of IT operations

Specific qualifications:

  • Expert-level knowledge of Linux, common Linux tools, and shell scripting – RedHat preferred
  • Experience performing periodic, routine server maintenance, and mitigating security issues
  • General networking knowledge in areas such as firewall administration, subnetwork design and creation, NAT, DNS, and IPSEC VPNs
  • A solid understanding of Ansible, configuration automation, and DevOps concepts
  • A basic familiarity of Linux hardening tools like firewalld, SELinux, auditd, and fapolicyd
  • Experience with, or interest in, configuration and administration of monitoring tools like the Elastic stack
  • Familiarity with the NIST SP 800-171 and/or Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) would be valuable
  • A working knowledge of, or interest in configuration compliance audit and security scanning tools like OpenSCAP, and Nessus
  • BS in Computer Science and at least 3 years' relevant experience; or at least 7 years' relevant experience
